A Travel First!

So I know I don't always post about health related things (yes, it's a bit of a hodgepodge, variety is the spice of my life! Winking) but that is very good news because my health is no longer ALL I think about! You can imagine how thrilled I am to be able to move forward in my life on to other things...

Health is still the biggest moderator of every day for me. I just spent the past 31 days traveling around the country, 3 trips for work and 1 for vacation, to Colorado, Vermont, Boston, and Florida. Last year I did "only" 3 trips in this time period and I had a cold for four weeks straight! :/ So my ONLY goal this winter was to Not.Get.Sick. How'd I do? I am home as of this weekend, and remained well for the duration, hurray! For me, this is a huge accomplishment, and certainly the most I've ever traveled to different places. I run programs for work that are so rewarding, but entail very long days and often reduced sleep, so very different than just a business trip.

I find that the strategy of setting a low bar goal and keeping it really simple (i.e. 1 goal: DO NOT GET SICK) really works for me.

I don't normally get colds (always thought it had something to do with the immunosuppressant I'm on for Crohn's) but with all that stress and plane time it was tough to avoid last time.

Traveling has always been complicated in my world - I have long emulated a Cathy cartoon when it comes to pre-trip packing frenzys. All-nighters are a given (because I have to try everything on... Happy), and delirium doesn't help! My family and friends know all about this unfortunately and have suffered through many an episode traveling with me. Since traveling the past 6 years for work, I have gotten much better with streamlining my packing, both packing less and taking less time. It still takes me all night/day, but I am carting around less so that is progress.

The time consuming part is sorting all my daily supplements/meds and packing all my powders and potions. With 4 back to back trips in one month, this was especially challenging this time.

I had just a couple strategies to survive this beast of a winter: eat foods that I knew would agree with me, move as much as I could, and stay hydrated. I now know the simple foods I do well with and are easy to find on the road, so I stocked up on those when I got to each of the 4 destinations- for breakfast, Kind Vanilla Blueberry granola, Greek yogurt, and ripe bananas. For snacks, Vega sport protein bars, Mary's gone crackers, cheese. I try to also eat very safe on the road, as boring as that is, so turkey, spinach, cheese GF or paleo sandwich/wrap, guacamole and chips, bunless burgers, Kombucha. Protein. I also drank very little alcohol and just chugged water, Ultima electrolytes, and coconut water every chance I got.

I am very happy to see that the effort I've been putting into working out pre-travels definitely contributed to me staying healthier this time around. It is usually very hard to find time to exercise during these work trips, but I managed to do more over this month than I did last time, a couple hikes in the snow, a visit to the gym, and I made a big effort to just get as much sleep as I could. Still not enough, but more than last time!

The other thing I was able to do because of the scheduling this time was have a week of mostly vacation to Vermont in-between trips, so while I was still traveling, I had some down time and cut down on more plane trips by staying up north until my next program, and I know that really made a difference. Quality time with dear loved ones was so helpful as well- hugs decrease our cortisol and strengthen our immune system Happy I was also lucky to take a day off at the end of my final program last Friday to enjoy the ocean!

I did still experience several migraines, and most were due to frequent altitude changes, which was unavoidable. I supplemented with oxygen this time in CO which helped my head a great deal on the days I was able to do it. I also had a couple stomach upsets, after Indian food (something I can normally east most times but was probably a little risky on the road) and Mexican (which also is normally OK but given other stress factors, not this time). Overall I probably interacted with, hugged or shook hands with over 200 people directly, and I am very proud that I came home healthy!

Then there is the aftermath of a stint such as this... sigh. The overflowing inbox, voicemails, and to dos piled up while away, and the new work generated from these programs to now complete.

I need to work my post-travel game just as hard as I did my travel plan so that I STAY well- the time returning home from a trip is the best time to implement and do new things, as our day-to-day routines are disrupted, so I am capitalizing on that. I spent the weekend unpacking, cleaning, and some relaxing time with good people and the earth. Will continue to bite chunks off each day of progress in this next beautiful month of March!

eggs and late night diner eats.

I had a busy week socially with 4 evening events, beginning last Saturday night- jamming until the wee hours with friends (held my first banjo!), Air Supply 40th anniversary outdoor concert Laugh, karaoke night at the local tavern, and an amazing live show with Delta Rae- whew! Looking forward to a much tamer recovery week ahead. We went to eat some diner food late night after the show Thursday (at the same place I was at recently where someone gave us free Air Supply tickets!! Your House) and I got a smorgasbord of food (necessary to counterbalance some beverages consumed)- something I have now done twice in span of one month, but it's been many years before that! I miss late night diners from my days up north in NY- they are the best.

I had: 1 small box of honey nut cheerios with a splash of milk, grits, bacon, a cheese omelette, and some decaf coffee. ! Go on girl! I have to admit it was very fun evening all around, it was awesome to just let go and chow down, and slow down that alcohol metabolism. And to eat exactly what I wanted- that elusive desire to be "normal" here and there.

I have not been able to tolerate eggs for a while now, maybe a year and a half or more. It has been really hard because it was one of my main staples to eat, I did eggs with everything- quiche, banana pancake (1 egg, 1 banana), omelettes, scrambled, eggs over hard, eggs on pizza, pasta, etc. etc. They have however still been fine cooked/baked in things, even up to 4 eggs.

So, winding down from this big week today, a glorious Saturday to myself, I am here to report that I did great with the food late Thursday night, including the omelette! I am so, cautiously, excited!!! And obviously the eggs were not organic, free range blah blah Laugh

I just made some migas for brunch today and am trying them again. I'm wondering about food combinations, and if because I ate them with everything else I ate if that made a difference. It's also curious because I had alcohol that night, and that usually cruises right through me! So I was even more incredulous that I felt well yesterday. This stuff is always really complex to tease out. What is helping with this shift? Finding a great daily fiber solution, which I finally have and I could sing from the rooftops about (hurray for psyllium and acacia)?

I've also been a bit obsessed with organic blue corn chips lately and have eaten them daily... need to wind down on this trend a smidge Winking but they are so easy and delicious. This post has some great insights about the benefits of blue corn and how to incorporate it into the diet.

Well shit (yep literally) - as I finish this post, the bathroom calls. Sad Seems this egg attempt has failed today. I will keep the faith, given that I was OK with diner eggs the other night, and try again sometime soon. The other food that I have had trouble with in recent years is spinach- I've added that back in cautiously and have been doing OK with it so far...

my perfect sandwich.

So, I don't always have bagels, but when I do... you can bet I'm going to make my perfect sandwich. This kind of sandwich was the one I fantasized about (no joke) when I was on my liquid diet for 6 months. Nothing fancy, basically just a club sandwich variation- and ooh I love a club sandwich, diner style... since going gluten free 15 years ago, I haven't found the perfect club yet out on the town, but I know I will one day. On days like this when I work from home, I get to make this delicacy.

My favorite are everything bagels, and this one is Sami's millet and flax onion (I love anything onion or garlic). Growing up in NY, it is easy to become a bagel connoisseur, and deli's and mile high sandwiches are big there.

Interestingly, my very favorite deli is in Phoenix, Arizona called Chompie's. I used to drive an hour from where we lived in South Phoenix to get there, and for me it was an oasis in the desert! Happy A quick look shows me they have gotten on the gluten free bandwagon and I am salivating, thinking about when my next trip to AZ will be! The place is incredible, the people are so friendly, and I feel right at home. I am happy just typing about it! Not to mention their menu is the most extensive I have ever seen! And their bakery case is to die for. It is a must visit in my humble opinion if you are in the Phoenix area.

OK, back to the sandwich. First I lightly toast the bagel. Then spread pesto mayo on both sides. Next I add swiss cheese, my all time favorite, either Jarlsburg lite, which I appreciate as a product of Norway that is strictly controlled and hormone free, or organic swiss of some kind. I found this link helpful when looking at cheese as a vice that perhaps we can live with in a healthy lifestyle: Because of my food limitations, I do eat a lot of cheese. It is something my system handles well, and it's easy protein and fuel for an on the go lifestyle. I am committed now to eating the best quality I can and trying to stay away from the bad stuff, and continuing to search for other foods that work!

Next comes turkey, and I usually do Applegate Farms honey maple turkey breast but also Oscar Meyer selects natural applewood smoked turkey breast too because I really love the thinness and folded cold cut style (yes I pick my nutritional battles Happy). Then some organic spinach, which is about all I can tolerate of raw veggies so works great, and topped with some nitrate free crispy bacon if I have it (I do love Applegate's sunday bacon). Yum- time to eat!

Heading out the door with my bag of drinks at the ready, and laughing at myself... this is my collection for the day, mostly for the morning... green (or black) tea, Medibulk fiber for my gut, Ultima Replenisher electrolytes for my head, and a smoothie. Happy Yes, I go to the bathroom a lot, but I could not live without these!

Update: Thorne Research changed their formula for Medibulk because they were having trouble sourcing a clean psyllium, and it just does not work anymore for me! Sad Floundered for a few months trying to figure out a new option, and came up with mixing organic acacia fiber (RenewLife) with psyllium husk powder (I use Yerba Prima)- 1 heaping TBSP acacia to 3 heaping tsps. of psyllium in a blender ball cup (I have like 100 of these Laugh). There is still some controversy on the psyllium because of California Prop. 65, but the worry is so, so small and I was so overjoyed to get back to the psyllium, which is what truly works for me that I am just running with it, Prop. 65 be damned!


late night dinner fixins.

So, after a night of working late (which happens fairly often when gearing up for out of town programs), I get home and I'm over hungry. Tonight I didn't do too badly to throw this together - Annie's gluten free mac and cheese, chicken andouille sausage, black olives, and spinach, topped with a pinch of Celtic sea salt. I really love one bowl meals, classic simplicity and can be eaten on the couch during the winter hibernation months. It could have been better and it could have been worse! Dinner time is definitely a struggle for me to get it together, because I'm usually pooped by the time I get home, often after running an errand or two after work as well, and I eat cheese and crackers and call it a night. I'm determined to improve in this department, slowly but surely. This felt like a small step in the right direction. Happy Also last 3 posts here mention pasta, I'm seeing a pattern!


death row meal!

Found these the other day at Earth Fare and I jumped for joy! I'm always scoping out the new products that are coming into stores seemingly every day now, but I have been waiting for Gluten Free Ravioli for a long, long time. I was raised in Upstate NY in a very heavily Italian community, and that is basically the only cuisine I ate until I college! Spinach ravioli is my death row meal, so you can imagine how happy I was... I ate half for lunch today and the rest for dinner! Laugh Two minutes to prepare, drizzled with olive oil, topped with freshly grated sheep's cheese (easier to digest per my naturopath), and I was a very happy girl.



So this was my original idea for the site, to track my well-being and how I'm feeling, what and how I'm eating, sleeping, moving, etc. and see what is what. I've started this many times over the years, in many various journals and notebooks and have never been able to get a consistent rhythm going, because usually life gets busy and overwhelming, especially where my health has been concerned. I have the data and eventually want to track it over time to see what trends I notice and continue to puzzle out my complex health state, which can feel like multiple mystery novels at times! I am my very own Chief Health Investigator and I have the power to deduce, learn and evolve.

I'm keeping this entry here for now as a reminder, as I may want to come back to it at some point. I've been keeping a calendar for a couple years now, tracking migraines, gut health, and other things I've added or changed regarding my health. Always searching for the best way to track these things and haven't found a solution that works for me yet. Will keep working on it!
